World Humanitarian Day, 19 August 2017

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, UN in Tajikistan pays special tribute to and honour all humanitarian workers around the globe who stand on the front lines of war and disaster, carrying on their dignified mission in the name of those who are suffering.

Humanitarian workers provide life-saving assistance consisting of first aid, nutrition, shelter and help rebuild after disaster has struck. These workers often battle violence, local diseases and hunger while attempting to save lives and provide relief to those most in need.

The UN in Tajikistan remembers the aid workers who lost their lives in Tajikistan serving the cause of peace and providing help to people in need. During the 1992-1997 civil war in Tajikistan, the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT) suffered seven fatalities, including three military observers and four civilian staff.

The UN in Tajikistan continues to serve to save lives and alleviate suffering caused either by natural disasters or human activity. Every year, disasters cause immense suffering for hundreds of people in Tajikistan, mostly those who are vulnerable.  “UN in Tajikistan not only strives to provide life-saving assistance and rehabilitation support to disaster-affected communities but also support in longer term risk reduction and prevention efforts” Said Ms. Pratibha Mehta, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan.

The UN in Tajikistan will continue to help the people of Tajikistan and support the Government, following the international principles of humanity, impartiality and neutrality.

World Humanitarian Day is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who have risked and lost their lives in humanitarian service. The Day was designated by the General Assembly in 2008 to coincide with the date of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. Each year, World Humanitarian Day focuses on a theme, bringing together stakeholders from across the humanitarian system to advocate for survival, well-being, and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.

This World Humanitarian Day, we come together in solidarity with the millions of people caught in armed conflict, suffering from the consequences of natural disasters and to all the aid workers doing their best to provide assistance.
