Congratulatory note of Mr. Jan Harfst, UN Resident Coordinator a.i in the Republic of Tajikistan to “Jumhuriat” newspaper and citizens of Tajikistan

Dear citizens of the country,

Dear readers,

Allow me, on behalf of United Nations family in the Republic of Tajikistan, to congratulate all of you on the momentous occasion of the 25thanniversary of the country’sindependence. We wish happiness and prosperity to every family and every citizen of Tajikistan. We are proud to have served the people and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, under the leadership of His Excellency Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, on the path to peace and sustainable development over the years.

The United Nations has been present in the country since 1993.

During the dark years of the civil war and its aftermath, successive Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General have worked tirelessly help bring peace to the country, while the UN’s Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies provided humanitarian aid and helped with reconstruction and recovery. Since then, support has been provided to a wide variety of programmes and projects in areas such as sustainable economic development, food security, good governance and human rights, health and education, migration and employment, gender equality and child protection, disaster risk reduction and response, climate change management and protection of the environment, and much more. I note that at the present time, there are 23 UN Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies represented in the country, and for the past five years, about 390 million US dollars were invested throughthe UN Development Assistance Framework for Tajikistan (UNDAF). Last year we signed with the government the new Development Assistance Framework for 2016-2020, committing ourselves toimplementing the priorities of the country and to mobilize for this purpose more than 363 million US dollars.

Since Tajikistan joined the United Nations as a full-fledged member in early 1992, the country has become a keen supporter of promoting solutions of global issues and has initiated various initiatives on a global scale. Among these, the personal commitment of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Mr. Emomali Rahmon, to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and the Government’s high profile in leading global water resource management initiatives stand out. Tajikistan has now committed itself to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, which were adopted by world leaders during the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, and has aligned its new National Development Strategy 2016-2030 with the Goals.

We, the representatives and personnel of the United Nations family in Tajikistan, immensely value the close and fruitful partnership with the people and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. The proud and hard-working women and men of this country, from the highest levels of Government to the smallest and most isolated settlements, have shown unwavering commitment to achieving peace and prosperity, and determination in overcoming the many obstacles that have stood in the way. While the country continues to face many challenges, we have no doubt that Tajikistan will successfully continue on this path, aided by its deep-rooted culture and welcoming spirit. You can be assured that the United Nations, its Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies, are ready to continue the journey with you.

Once again, I congratulate the people of Tajikistan with 25 years of independence and wish for a bright future for all.

Thank you
