A High Level symposium is launched in Dushanbe


A High Level Symposium on SDG 6 and Targets “Ensuring that no one is left behind in access to water and sanitation” with participation of about 700 participants from 90 countries was launched on August 9, 2016 in Dushanbe. The symposium which is hosted under the leadership of the President of Tajikistan, His excellency Mr. Emomali Rahmon, co-organized jointly by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and UN DESA. The technical and financial support is provided by other UN system organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, UNESCO, The World Bank Group as well as with participation of other UN agencies.  UN high officials are represented by Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and Mr. Lenni Montiel, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, UN DESA.  The message on behalf of UN Secretary General to symposium participants was delivered by USG, Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya.

The symposium will take place during August 9-11, 2016 with the main objectives:

-        to provide a platform for a focused and balanced discussion on policy measures, actions and means of implementation to fast-track implementation of the water SDG and related targets.

-        to undertake an evidence-based assessment of recent country experiences in advancing integrated water resource management, by sharing lessons learned and good practices in improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene, in increasing water use efficiency, reducing water pollution, protection of water basins and ecosystems and advancing international cooperation and partnerships.

-        to identify and discuss obstacles encountered and explore opportunities for regional and multilateral cooperation and partnerships.

-        To provide an occasion for announcing concrete partnership initiatives.

During the first day of the symposium the President of Tajikistan, His Excellency Mr. Emomali Rahmon pointed to the necessity of incorporating the SDG 6 into the national sustainable development strategy of countries as a core component by taking into account the specific features of each country. Particularly he said:

“For Tajikistan, which has scarce land resources, rational and effective use of water resources is of fundamental importance to enhance socio-economic sustainable development, particularly, to reduce poverty, ensure food and energy security, as well as develop the industry and agriculture. Therefore, the issue of water resources management is of particular importance in our National Development Strategy, which is currently being improved and finalized by experts.” (www.watersdg2016.org)

During the first thematic session of the symposium on August 9 on Launching of Partnership initiatives the suggestion of Tajikistan to announce the International Decade on Water for Sustainable Development was discussed and supported by the participants.

The symposium is considering possible measures to achieve targets committed under the SDG 6 to ensure universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all.
