Human rights in Tajikistan to face scrutiny by UN treaty body

GENEVA (3 July 2013) – The human rights record of Tajikistan will face the scrutiny of the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the second time on Monday 9 July and Tuesday 10 July in meetings that will be webcast live on the Internet.

As one of the 167 states parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Tajikistan is required to undergo regular examinations of its human rights record before the Human Rights Committee.

The sessions will take place on 9 July from 15:00 to 18:00 and on 10 July from 10:00 to 13:00 Geneva time. The Committee, which is composed of 18 independent experts, will engage in a dialogue with the delegation of Tajikistan on questions relating to the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

Tajikistan, which was last considered by the Geneva-based body in 2005, has submitted a report on implementation of its human rights obligations to the Committee and a number of non-governmental organisations have also sent reports for the Committee’s consideration.

The concluding observations of the Human Rights Committee on Tajikistan will be made available at http://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/hrc/hrcs108.htm on Thursday 25 July, after which interviews can be arranged with Committee members.
