220 university students and 80 school children participated in the Run Against Hunger

DANGARA. On Saturday the 18th of October over 220 university students and 80 school children participated in the Run Against Hunger and a in a drawing competition, respectively, to celebrate this year’s World Food Day in the Tajik city of Dangara. Every year theFood and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) join to celebrate World Food Day and progress made towards ending global hunger in partnership with the Hukumat of Dangara, Committee of Youth Affairs, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture.

This year’s theme of the World Food Day was Family Farming, drawing attention to the critical contribution of family farms to eradicate hunger and poverty, to ensurefood security and adequate nutrition, to improve livelihoods, to protect the environment, and to achieve sustainable development, in particular for rural areas.

The city of Dangara was most suitable to hold this event, being the seat of an Agricultural University. Dangara students participated in the Run Against Hunger which comprised a 3 km and a 100 m race track, and was organized with the invaluable support of the local branch of the State Youth Committee. Children from schools number 10 and 27 participated in a drawing competition in which they were invited to put their ideas about family farming down on paper.

During the awards ceremony, also attended by Mr Parviz, head of Agrarian Policy and Food Security Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Committee of Youth Affairs, Sports and Tourism, and the Deputy Head of the Hukumat, who praised the efforts of farmers and partners in the district to achieve excellence in the sectors of food and agriculture. The Deputy Head of the Hukumat also welcomed the support of FAO, IFAD and WFP to enable thousands of small farming families and school children to enjoy a future with improved food security and better nutrition. As a token of appreciation the local authorities had prepared performances by local dancers and singers, which were met with great enthusiasm from the attending students and school children in the local Theatre of Music and Drama.
