Delivery of agricultural machinery to the mountainous regions of Tajikistan

July 19, 2014.Development of agriculture in the Republic of Tajikistan is one of the strategic priorities of the government. With this important objective the government attractsforeign investments, primarily aimed at economic development of communities in rural areas by strengthening their capacityforself-governance, which leads to increased agricultural productivity and incomes.

One of such investment projects is the KhatlonLivelihoods Support Project, which aims to reduce poverty by strengthening the institutional capacity of the selected communities and financingpriority investments to encourage the intensification of on-farm production, to improve physical infrastructure and to stimulate other income-generating activities and employment. This project is being implemented under the Grant Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), with the Ministry of Agriculture as an executing agency. It should be mentioned that the UN FAO Investment Centre has been providing technical support from the beginning of project implementation, while MSDSP has been mobilizing the participating communities.
Under the project and thanks to the support from the government, agricultural machinery from the Republic of Belarus and Turkey was imported in July 2014 amounting to approximately USD 2 million. As the result, the population of 56 villages of Shurobodand Muminobod districts received 62 new tractors MTZ-82 and 408 pieces of other agricultural equipment.
Support of these two mountainous regions by the project in terms of ensuring timely agricultural machinerysupply is abase for the new and modern way for development of the agricultural sector in Tajikistan.
The Project Director Mr. Karimov Sadiemphasized that besides providing agricultural machinery, there are other activitiesin the targeted areas, such as drinking water supply, power supply, construction and rehabilitation of bridges, reconstruction of roads, etc. First of all, the project will covervulnerable groups of the population. The total number of households that will benefit from the project is 8782.
It should be noted that implementation of the Khatlon Livelihoods Support Projecthasstarted in 2009 and after some amendments to the Grant Agreement on 24 July 2013, the project implementation was resumed and assignedto the State Enterprise Project Management Unit "Livestock and Pasture Development".
