National campaign against soil-transmitted helminthiases conducted in Tajikistan

The large-scale de-worming campaign in Tajikistan was carried out in Tajikistan on week 15 – 20 September 2014 with the support provided by WHO in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Social Protection and Education of the Republic of  Tajikistan.

The campaign covered pre-school and school age children (5-14 years) with the total coverage of 1580000 children.

According to WHO more than 2 billion people worldwide infected with different helminthiasis. Climatic factors and hygienic conditions of Republic of Tajikistan are closely linked with the spread of these infections. 

The survey conducted in 2011 revealed that nearly 50% of the children are infected with soil-transmitted helminthiases across the country.

2.8 million tablets of Abendazole was donated by the WHO GlaxoSmithKline donation programme to countries suffering from the burden of these infections.

The campaign was conducted in pre-school institutions and schools with the purpose to reduce the morbidity due to soil-transmitted helminthiases and protect the health of population. The second de-worming round in planned for spring 2015.
