Tajikistan moves forward in women's rights advancement

Joint support of UN agencies and national and international partners to Tajikistan in implementation of its obligations related to implementation of international treaties’ recommendations.

On April 22 UNFPA CO, jointly with UN Women, Swiss Cooperation Office and Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Tajikistan conducted the working meeting with members of national groups working on CEDAW and Universal Periodic Review (UPO), on possible ways of synergy in their work.

The main aim of the meeting was to discuss interactions to fulfill the obligations of the RT on CEDAW and the Council of the United Nations in connection with the UPR of Human Rights in Tajikistan for the period of 2013 -2015.
Various partners, including high level representatives of Parliament, Chairperson and staff of the CWFA, Tajikistan Ombudsman and its staff, UN Agencies, international organizations, most active human right public organizations (members of the Coalition of NGO working on CEDAW and the NGO Coalition working on UPR), representatives of the CEDAW and UPR working groups, members of the profile committee, experts, representatives of the CS and MP participated at the event.

During the meeting, participants shared with the news, their ideas and experience related to the topic and came up with ideas for follow-up actions. All participants agreed that it’s right time for synergy and both working groups have about 2 years for implementation of the action plans and future reporting. Mainstreaming of gender equality in UPR processes, as well as mainstreaming of Human Rights based approach and consideration of universal human rights and freedoms in CEDAW are crucial. The participants exchanged their contact details and plan to work jointly.
