Visit of the UN Secretary General to Tajikistan, 5-6 April 2010

MDG Progress

Tajikistan, along with other 191 countries, has joined the Millennium Declaration after its ratification ten years ago. The direction of further activities of the world community that are reflected in the Declaration, are concordant with the national priorities and goals that are being implemented in Tajikistan.

With the purpose of discussing the ten years efforts of the world community in implementation of the MDGs, there has been the global MDG Summit organized by the United Nations from 20-22 September 2010 in New York, where the countries that joined the Millennium Declaration have presented their reports. Tajikistan has also presented its report which reflects the progress made in achieving the MDGs in Tajikistan.

The report has been prepared by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan with the technical support of the United Nations. The preparation of the report has been directly coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan.

It is important to mention that based on the Millennium Development Goals there has been a number of strategic documents developed by the Tajik Government that outline the main directions and priorities of the country. The National Development Strategy (up to 2015), Poverty Reduction Strategies for the periods of 2007-2009 and 2010 – 2012 are among them.

As a result of implementation of measures envisages in MDGs, Tajikistan has managed to decrease the poverty level from 72.4% in 2003 to 46.7% in 2009. Also, the amount of school age population receiving the elementary and middle school education has increased as well as the quality of social services has improved.

Meanwhile, some of the factors, such as global financial and economic crises, deterioration of the regional partnership, natural disasters, have made the process of achieving MDGs more complicated for Tajikistan as well as for other countries of the region. In spite of the existing hardships, the policy of the Tajik Government is directed to improving the quality of life of its population, decreasing the poverty level, provision of social protection that corresponds to the strategic goals of the country and the MDGs.
