Coordination Mechanisms

After the turbulence and civil war following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan is now a peaceful and rapidly developing country. The overriding aim of the UNCT is to eradicate poverty and to reach the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) by 2015, for which coordination is critical.

Coordination within the UN System and between UN agencies and their partners was significantly enhanced mid-2008 by the Joint Country Partnership Strategy (JCPS) process, including preparation of sector strategies for supporting the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) and National Development Strategy (NDS). In January 2009, critical coordination gaps were closed with World Bank and ADB assuming lead agency responsibilities for energy and transportation respectively, and with UN agencies leading environment, disaster management sectors, health, education, and several other key sector groups.
