Organisational Profile
Political UN Office entrusted with the following mandate:
- To provide the political framework and leadership for post-conflict peace-building activities of the UN system in the country. This would include supporting the efforts of the Resident Coordinator and the UN system, including the Bretton Woods institutions, in promoting an integrated approach in the development and implementation of post-conflict peace-building programs aimed at national reconstruction, economic recovery, poverty alleviation and good governance;
- To mobilize, in close cooperation with the UN country team, international support for the implementation of targeted programs aimed at strengthening the rule of law, demobilization, voluntary arms collection and employment creation for former irregular fighters;
- To help in creating enabling environment for consolidating peace, democracy and the rule of law;
- To liaise with the Government, political parties and other representatives of civic society in broadening national consensus and reconciliation.
Past and Current Programmes
- Further consolidation of achievements of peace process and smooth reintegration of former combatants into civilian life;
- Vocational training and sustainable employment creation for former combatants and decommissioned military;
- Promotion of national reconciliation, democracy, rule of law and human rights:
- Political Discussion Club;
- Increase of institutional capacities of Parliament;
- Compliance of national legislation and practice with internationally recognized standards;
- Establishment of human rights information and documentation centre;
- Creating human rights education capacities in national institutions, NGOs and academic institutions;
- Support to Government and NGOs in the process of human rights treaty reporting;
- Conflict prevention and resolution.
Future Programming Direction
1. Continuation of the Political Discussion Club;
2. Vocational training and sustainable employment creation for former combatants and decommissioned military;
3. Electoral issues;
4. Increase of institutional capacities in mass media sector;
5. Increase of institutional capacities in the power structures and rule of law:
- Police Training Centre;
- Forensic Centre Expansion.
6. Human Rights:
- Implementation of treaty bodies recommendations;
- Human rights education;
- Peace education and youth outreach.
7. Conflict prevention and conflict resolution.
